I've had a note pinned to a cork board on my desk for many years now.
It reads: "I will write this novel because I want to leave a legacy for my family." Every author has a different motivation for writing. Some write as a profession. Some write to see their name on the cover - this is pretty cool, I must admit. Other people just have to get a story out of their head. All of these are good motives - but none were enough to get me to finish Drive Away. The genesis of the story began some 20 years ago when I worked in the back office of a car dealership in Appalachia. Through these many years, I started and stopped too many times to count. But every time I thought I'd just quit, a picture came to mind of a legacy that consisted of piles and piles of unfinished drafts of the story. It's a legacy I didn't want. The drive to finish never left me because I needed to show my children that it can and should be done.

"If yours is a life that your children want to emulate... That's the ultimate legacy."
